• KIDNAPPING, CAUCASIAN STYLE •

2025

The title "Kidnapping, Caucasian Style" functions as a metaphor for the loss of autonomy and safety experienced by queer individuals in parts of the Caucasus. It does not refer to a literal act, but to the social, cultural, and political pressures that restrict identity and silence difference.

The work addresses how freedom can be gradually taken away through fear, control, and exclusion.
The Caucasus is a region defined by deep histories, strong traditions, and complex cultural identities. Within this environment, rigid norms around gender and sexuality continue to shape public and private life. For many queer people, visibility carries risk. Social rejection, family pressure, and public hostility often create conditions where concealment becomes a strategy for survival.

The project explores the broader structures that sustain this vulnerability. It considers the prevalence of violence, blackmail, and intimidation, alongside the limited or inconsistent legal protections available. In many cases, harm is reinforced by silence and impunity, leaving individuals without meaningful support or recourse. At its core, Kidnapping, Caucasian Style is about dignity and the right to self-determination. It seeks to document lived realities with clarity and respect, while confronting the systems that confine identity and limit personal freedom.
